HULTHEMIA – TWO VARIETIES??

Left: Flower and leaf of R. hulthemia persica as recorded in "Roses" by Jack Harkness (Dent,1978). Flower 2.5cms diameter approx. Below left: Extract from Xinjiang Qiangwei (Xinjiang Species Roses), ISBN. 7-5372-2516-5/Q-37. Leaf of R. hulthemia berberifolia Pall., and right, R. hulthemia persica Michx., represented as separate varieties on the basis of leaf form and some other minor differences.

In May 2005, Jean and I made a trip to Urumqi, capital city of Xinjiang Province in far North-West China, to try and locate and observe R.hulthemia berberifolia. This we did, with the result that we were unable to confirm that these are separate varieties of Hulthemia. We found examples of both forms of leaves (X and Y) on one stem of the plant as under. It is interesting to observe that the X-leaf with its more pointed base is in a more junior position, being on a lateral from the main stem.
